When I was just a child, I followed behind my grandmother like a little duckling and tried to help her with her chores. She would go into the chicken house and gather the eggs. If a hen was on a nest, she would reach under and take away the eggs. I was too timid to touch a hen, but I would gather eggs from nests where there were no hens. I thought she was very brave. She let me put the eggs in her apron.
